Forrest City, Arkansas is located in the eastern corner of Arkansas, about 20 miles east of Little Rock. The town was founded in 1881 by Deacon John Forrest and his wife Anna. The first gun shop in Forrest City was opened by Deacon Forrest and his brother-in-law, Willard Bruce, in 1885. In 1907, the store moved to its present location on Main Street. In 1935, General Electric built a plant in Forrest City and began producing electric guns for the civilian market. The company closed its doors in 1961. In 1975, the National Rifle Association (NRA) bought the properties around the original store building and began renovating it into a training center for aspiring NRA members. Today’s training complex includes an outdoor range, indoor shooting ranges, a library/research center with more than 100 handguns available for loan or purchase, as well as classrooms and apartments used by NRA members for personal use.
