In 1951, Forrest City became the site of an Air Force Base after it was donated by Driggs Oil Company Chairman Colonel Allen Gentry to the USAF for use as an airfield known as Fayetteville Army Air Field (later Wright-Patterson AFB). Many other businesses followed suit such as Kmart and ExxonMobil gas stations before it closed in 1990 due to economic troubles associated with Operation Desert Storm oil production nearby. In 2002, Forest City Elementary School reopened after being closed for over 25 years due to budget cuts made by then Pulaski County Schools Superintendent Donnell Dixon; however future plans call for demolition of both schools along with land acquisition necessary to build a new elementary school complex that would include kindergarten through eighth grade education within a mixed-use development adjacent to Interstate 30/Upper I-35 exit ramp off Interstate 15 southbound just east of where Main Street meets Interstate 30). A $2 million effort will also be made available through private donations over time to fund restoration/replacement/updates on all three aging churches – First Baptist Church (1912), Knox Presbyterian Church (1927) and Peoples Temple Baptist Church (1968) – all now classified ashistoric buildings because they are rare examples of Prairie School architecture from this period – making themeligible for renovation or reconstruction but not replacement under current guidelines set forth by preservation organizations such as American Institute for Architects (AIA).
