Forrest City is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the second most populous city in Pulaski County after Saline. The land that would become Forrest City was settled by Arkansans in the early 1800s. The first post office in Forrest City was established on July 1, 1881, and remained open until October 30, 1907. In 1903, a sawmill and grist mill were built near what would become the city's downtown area. In 1907, Forrest City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,500 people. In the 1920s and 1930s, Forrest City experienced significant growth due to its location as a key transportation hub for Southern Arkansas during World War II (1942-1945). After World War II ended and cotton prices went up, many small businesses closed and dust storms occurred throughout Eastern Arkansas because of lack of money to pay for necessary repairs or replacements following decades of drought-related crop failures caused by American Indian Wars (1870-1894). It wasn't until the late 1990s that Forrest City began experiencing rapid growth again due to suburban development around it along Interstate 25 (I-25) which has since encircled much of town including new shopping malls and other types of high-traffic destinations like state fairgrounds and football stadiums. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conwaysville, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Forrest City was founded in 1881 by J.P. Morgan and others as a small farming town on the east bank of the Arkansas River adjacent to what is now North Little Rock. In 1911 Forrest City became an incorporated city with a population of 5,000. The first post office in Forrest City opened on December 12, 1881, under the name "Athens." A second post office called "Fayette" was established on November 21, 1882; it closed on October 3, 1886 due to financial difficulties. On October 15th of that year Forrest City acquired its present name from New Orleans philanthropist and banker J P Morgan who donated $10 for a post office in Forrest City. The first mail train arrived in Forrest City on November 16th 1888 by way of Clinton and Springdale (now West Little Rock). In 1901 when the community had grown to 10,000 people it annexed parts of neighboring towns including North Conway and Clinton which made it one of the largest cities west of Memphis Tennessee at that time. That same year Forrest City’s water system was built by W M Stroud Company & Sons which supplied water to many surrounding towns also via pipeline from nearby reservoirs On January 31st 1909 a fire destroyed most of downtown (the only building not rebuilt) but did not affect any other buildings within or around downtown as all indoor plumbing then existed utilizing copper piping rather than lead piping which caused no issues years later when fluoridation became mandatory throughout much of America
