The first expansion mount for the M4A1 was the United States Army's (USAAF) Type A Mount. This mount featured an adjustable bipod and a carrying handle that allowed it to be placed on either side of the barrel, allowing it to be used in conjunction with an M203 grenade launcher. The Type A Mount was also available in black and green camouflage. In Vietnam, the USMC developed a version of the Type A Mount known as the 'M-LOK' mounting system.
