Fayetteville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 25,671 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Pulaski County government. Fayetteville is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Fayetteville were farmers and their families who arrived in 1827 from Missouri. They began to erect log cabin homes on a small creek that they named "Fayette." Shipping containers were brought into town to be used as shelter during a severe drought in 1892-93 which caused extensive damage to many homes and businesses. By 1905, there were over fifty buildings within the limits of present-day Fayetteville, most of which had been erected since before that year's settlement. In 1915, local businessmen reached an agreement with the federal government for donation of land for military training purposes near Fort Smith, Arkansas; this area became known as Camp Robinson (later Fort Riley). In 1932 construction began on what would become Fayetteville's first municipal building – a two-story redbrick building designed by noted Scottish architect Alexander Maclaren – which was dedicated on October 15th of that year. As World War II approached, much interest developed within the community in support of its ally Nazi Germany; however, few people actually voiced any disapproval until after war started and numerous innocent civilians were killed or maimed as a result from Allied bombing raids against German targets throughout Europe. When Fayetteville was liberated by American forces following World War II on November 11th 1945 it experienced one of the largest single exodus rates ever seen in Arkansas - more than 60% of its population left within days thereafter! The city quickly reverted back to its prewar proportions with only 8% growth over the next decade or so attributable to postwar refugees alone!
