Fayetteville is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas. It was founded on November 3, 1836, by James Fenton and his brothers John and Richard Fenton. The population was 25,000 at the time of its incorporation. In 1840, the Central Arkansas Railroad was built through town, making it easier for goods to be transported between Memphis and Little Rock. This made Fayetteville an important commercial center during the early 19th century. The first schools in Fayetteville were built in 1838-39; they were called "Fenton's Schoolhouse" until 1859 when James Fenton donated land to build a public school system which would eventually include all of downtown Fayetteville as well as many other districts across the city. The original brick building that still stands on Main Street near East Avenue still functions as a public school gymnasium today. In 1860, John Waddell became Mayor of Fayetteville after winning election with support from Governor George Rector (the predecessor of modern Arkansas governor). Waddell worked to increase trade within the city and helped develop industries such as cigar manufacturing and leather tanning which attracted new businesses and residents to town over time. He also promoted civic amenities like parks and libraries which continue to play an important role in contemporary life in downtown Fayetteville today. After Waddell's death in 1865, his son Augustus Waddell took control of the mayoralty from then on until 1907 when he became impeached for bribery charges following his unsuccessful attempt to gain re-election against incumbent James Meeks Sr.. Augustus Waddell served out his impeachment sentence before dying at age 83 years old in 1906.—Today, most citizens living Downtown are descended from Augustus Waddell’s three sons: Judge Augustus Ewing (1912-2004), Drayton Wesley Waddell (1920-2013),and Edwin Neal “Ed” Emmett (1927-present).
