Frémont and his party as Fort Smith (later named Fort Smith), Arkansas Territory's first capital. A post office was established at Fayetteville on November 15, 1837 and remained in operation until December 14, 1865; it was renamed Fort Smith on January 2nd of that year in honor of General Andrew Johnson's visit to the territory just one month prior. The city grew rapidly during the antebellum period due to its strategic location midway between Memphis and Cairo for trade with Mexico City and other parts of Texas and Mexico. Fayetteville became an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into what is now central Arkansas during this time period. In 1840–1841 Fayetteville hosted the first territorial legislature in Arkansas which enacted several laws designed to promote agriculture and commerce within the new territory including an act establishing a school district south of town; this legislation also created what would become known as "the Agricultural District". During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era America's only civil war victory over Confederate forces (the Army of Northern Missouri under General Robert Ewell) freed all slaves in almost all southern states except Alabama and Mississippi – making Fayetteville one of the last cities in the Confederacy to do so - primarily because white Unionists were afraid that black voters would rebel against their former masters should they be given full citizenship rights under Reconstruction rule. Consequently most African American residents working or living downtown resided along Pine Street which bisected downtown from Cottonwood Avenue where many poor whites lived near subsistence level due to lack of access to indoor plumbing or watermains until relatively recent timesxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
