Fayetteville, Arkansas is a city in the United States. It is the largest city in the Arkansas River Valley and part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Fort Smith metropolitan area. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is bordered by North Little Rock to the north, Fort Smith to the east, and Jonesboro to the south. Fayetteville was founded in 1819 as Fort Washington on land that now makes up much of downtown Fayetteville. With an estimated population of 2,000 at its peak in 1868, it was one of America's most populous cities during its early years. However, rapid growth and development led to social unrest and political polarization; this culminated with a violent rioting campaign known as "The Great Arkansas Riot" in 1871 which left over thirty-six people dead and dozens injured. In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts by President Abraham Lincoln following his Emancipation Proclamation, Fayetteville became an all-white city under a new municipal charter dating from 1865. In 1902 Fayetteville joined what were then called "The Southwestern United States Railway". This company became part of UP Railways after their merger with Northern Securities Corporation in 1996
