El Dorado, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Springdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "El Dorado" means "the gold country." The territory that made up present-day El Dorado was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1821, Ulysses S. Grant granted land to James K. Polk for his Donation Land Act, which gave President James K. Polk and other Westerners access to large swaths of Indian Territory as compensation for their losses during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1872, a group of wealthy men from Stuttgart, Germany founded El Dorado Mining Company with intentions of finding new sources of gold and silver ore in present-day Arkansas and northwestern Oklahoma. The company became successful and developed an extensive mining program in what are now Arkansas counties; production reached 2 million pounds (1 metric ton) of gold per year by 1886. By 1930, however, El Dorado Mining Company had ceased operations because it could not find new supplies of ore or money to support its costs; its assets were sold off piecemeal over the next few years until they were all acquired by The Hargrave Coal & Coke Company in 1931. In 1941, The Hargrave Coal & Coke Company merged with Peabody Coal & Iron Corporation to form Peabody Coal Corporation; El Dorados post office continued operating under that name until it changed to Little Rock on November 15th, 1951. During World War II (1939-45), El Dorado served as an internment camp for Japanese Americans living in northeastern Arkansas; after the war it reverted back to civilian control and resumed its traditional populace before becoming a center for coalmining during the early 1960s when heavy industry supplanted agriculture as mainstay of local economy; since then there has been very little change except for population growth which has outpaced economic growth rate 4 times over prosectorship span {1999 - 2013}.

It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community's name comes from an old Spanish term meaning "the golden land". The first settlers in what is now El Dorado were Spanish- American Missionaries who arrived in 1847. They named the area San Luis Potosi de la Palma after Potosi, Mexico City where they had been sent as missionaries to convert the Mexicans to Christianity. In 1875, gold was discovered near Arkadelphia and quickly became one of the most important locales for prospectors searching for this valuable resource. By 1886 over 100 men had been working at Oroville Hill on what would become known as El Dorado Row. In 1898 dynamite mining began on nearby White Sands and by 1903 entire hill had been blasted away leaving only dirt and boulders behind which miners could still find nuggets today. In 1902 a new railroad station was built in El Dorado with tracks leading directly to White Sands which made it possible for automobiles to finally enter the area and drive up Gold Rush Road (now US Highway 61) to gamble and pick up supplies during those days when there wasn’t much else to do but hunt and prospect for gold. Today many of the original buildings still stand including: The Baptist Church (built 1907), Schoolhouse #2 (built 1912), Post Office (built 1909), Masonic Lodge #1 (built 1911), Old Saloon & Poker Hall (founded 1889), Shoe Store & Restaurant(opened 1908). There are also several well-preserved pioneer homes such as Mrs. Hoggs' Ranch House which has been converted into a museum complete with reproductions of its original furnishings; Drury's Tavern which served as a hospital during World War I; Wagon Wheel Inn which housed mail delivery services until 1957; Henderson's General Store which operated from 1865 until 1906; Goodyear Shoesmithing Shop(founded 1881); Arkadelphia Telephone Exchange#3(1886); Western Union Telegraph Company Building(1889).
El Dorado was a treaty town in Arkansas, established on the east bank of the Little River, about 1836. It lasted until 1849, when it was abandoned by its residents because of Indian hostilities.
