El Dorado, Arkansas is a small town located in Jefferson County, Arkansas. The population was 901 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1871 by John C. El Dorado and his brother-in-law, Jesse Jameson. It was named for the legendary gold mine in California that made him rich. At its peak, El Dorado had a population of 4,000 people and businesses included five banks and four churches. When the economy crashed in the 1990s, El Dorado lost many jobs and residents began to flee to other towns in Jefferson County. Today, only a few hundred people live there full time while others commute to Little Rock or Fayetteville. The history of El Dorado goes back to 1871 when John C. El Dorado set out from Illinois with his brother-in-law Jesse Jameson on an attempt to find a new gold mine in California's Sierra Nevada foothills – something no other person had ever done before. After three months of traveling they arrived at what is now known as Battle Creek creek within sight of what is now Fresno, California (now part of San Bernardino County). They started mining for gold but soon realized there was much more potential for wealth downriver where streams emptied into the Sacramento River estuary: at present day El Dorado village site (the original name given to it by early settlers), which lay immediately adjacent to this newly discovered deposit of bullion! In March 1872 they organized their first company with seventy men including twenty from Illinois and all but one man from Missouri; this company became known as the “Gold Rush Company” because it prospected throughout western Kern County and parts of Butte County between May 6th through November 2nd 1872 inclusive). The success of their search led them later that year to rename themselves the “El Dormido Mining Company” after prominent local businessman Don José de la Hoz who also helped finance their search; he offered financial support until his death two years later at age seventy seven due largely to health problems caused by mercury poisoning brought about by working in mines near Los Angeles (at that time still under Spanish rule). By 1880 they were making $1 million annually from lead ore alone! They continued operating even during Prohibition which disrupted commercial activity across America although some members did manage to make money smuggling alcohol around country using aliases such as Tom Mix or Harry Smith etc.; however most Gold Rush veterans returned home following repeal without any significant gainful employment opportunities available outside of Northern California since everything except silver had been mined out east during prohibition!). In 1902 they merged with anothermining company called The renamed “Dormido Mines & Smelting Co., Ltd.", becoming one of America's largest metal companies before merging again with another metal firm called American Metals Incorporated in 1957.) El Dormido Mine & Smelting Works remains operational today continuing production of metal products including aluminum alloyings and stainless steel products used domestically and exported both domestically and abroad including several operations inside Mexico City where aluminum has been produced since 1965) - one reason being why this place has been referred variously over the years as "The Almanac Of American Industry" "One Of America's Top Metal Companies" etc.; not least because those are all accurate descriptions!
