By early 1837 more people had arrived and began to develop land around Hogback including placer mining operations on nearby hills which produced coins worth five or six shillings each. The town was named after General John Custer's ill-fated expedition against General Osage Indians during the Mexican War (1846–48). In 1840 an act was passed authorizing a post office to be established at El Dorado; it opened on October 10 that year. In November 1841 Jno Hanks purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of land east of town from James Swayne for $1,000 cash only—a price that set off an arms race among developers vying to壊 as much property as possible before Hanks could sell it back to anyone else.
