A few did stay in Arkansas; among them were Brigham Young and his family who founded Provo, Utah’s first city in 1847; Orson Pratt (founder of Mormonism) also arrived during this time frame; John Dickson arrived as a delegate from South Dakota at San Francisco’s Golden Gate International Exposition of 1893; Edwin Hubble (the discoverer of Hubble Space Telescope) also visited during this time frame

El Dorado was a territory in what is now Arkansas. It was named for the gold discovery at El Dorado Hills, in present-day Colorado. The first European to sight the hills, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, named them "Laplandia" after his homeland of Sweden. In 1799, James K. Polk sent an expedition led by Lt. Gov. John Caddick to explore the region and find new sources of gold and silver; they found none but returned home empty-handed in 1802. A second expedition discovered additional goldfields in 1805–1806 and again returned empty-handed both times; this time Caddick convinced President James K. Polk to send a third party under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter with orders to explore the area more fully and report back with suggestions for development or exploitation. By 1827, when Arkansas Territory was created from parts of three previous slave states ( Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas), El Dorado had been annexed as part of that territory - becoming its most populous county seat until 1907 when Little Rock became its largest city.]
