In 1836, the El Dorado Expedition discovered and named the Arkansas River after the local chief, Ulysses S. Grant. The town of El Dorado was founded in this area in 1837 by General James Wilkinson. In 1849, Benjamin Foulke defeated a force of Pawnee Indians at what is now North Little Rock, Arkansas. This event helped spur development of Little Rock as the regional capital for central Arkansas. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Arkansas from Missouri, Union troops advanced to within striking distance of Fort Smith but were driven back by Confederate cavalry under General Hugh Johnson. On October 16th, 1861 Johnson ordered his army to retreat into Texas instead of continuing on toArkansas; this action helped precipitate the Civil War in that state. The Battle of Little Rock took place on November 17th and resulted in Union Major-General David Dixon's death and about 150 casualties for the Confederacy including 30 dead Indian warriors
El Dorado, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. El Dorado is located on State Road 350 northeast of Arkadelphia. The first settler in what became El Dorado County was James Caldwell in 1837. Others who established rural homes here were John Sibley and Wm. Hickey in 1840; Neely Bogue and Jno. Treadwell in 1845; A C Moody and his brother James Moody in 1849; Ptee Murchison and his brothers Abram (1851) and George (1853). In 1860, the Great Western Railroad laid track through Pulaski County from Hot Springs to Pine Bluff, connecting with Memphis, Tennessee via Fayetteville/Springdale/Arkadelphia. This stimulated development around Springdale which began as a small farming community but soon developed into an agricultural center with large stockyards, two banks-the First National Bank and the Citizens National Bank-and numerous stores including those operated by Stephenson & Company which became one of Pulaski's largest employers during the late 19th century when it processed cottonseed crops for local mill owners along State Road 350 north of Arkadelphia before moving to its present location on Main Street near Dodds Ferry several years later. The arrival of railroads had a significant impact on life here as well as elsewhere along Arkansas' "Great American West" corridor: not only did they bring wealth and opportunity to new areas but also helped spur economic growth throughout much of eastern Arkansas during this period both before and after the Civil War. During World War I efforts were made by many people here to get involved in the war effort through various patriotic activities such as fundraising drives or selling goods donated by individuals or businesses; however no military service took place until 1918 when Private William Dyson enlisted in Company K 9th US Infantry from El Dorado County effective February 17th following parades at Greenwood Cemetery where he had volunteered prior to draft notice being sent home that April 3rd! He served honorably until shortly before his death October 15th 1918 while serving with Company C 2nd Battalion 9th US Infantry Regiment at Belleau Wood near Ypres Belgium – just over three weeks shy of his 21st birthday! On November 5th 1918 President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order 6172 making it an unlawful act for any person within the United States interested therein to enlist or volunteer for military service without first obtaining written consent from their nearest female relative Nineteen-year old Alice Pauline Laddie had been living with her grandparents Daniel Boone Laddie (1796-1864), wife Nancy (1799-1867), four children Elijah Washington Laddie (1827-1901), Mary Elizabeth Boone (1829-1900), Alfred Burr Laddie (February 10 1861 - December 25 1946) – all born within five months of each other at Laurel Creek Plantation east side Of Springdale aforesaid – since 1865 “a refugee girl” status having been certified by acting District Attorney Jesse Howard upon request thereof on March 5th 1915.. In 1917 “Aunt Jane” moved into her present home behind store after taking care of herself since 1915 when family moved out due health issues.. By 1922 Elmira Post office closed down because mail was delivered there then taken south across state line to Richland Springs AR resulting in loss $14 per month That year Mrs[illiam] Hardwick set up shop next door joinin post office early 1920s After he death postal service went back inside post office building For about ten years From 1960 thru 1966 mail was Deliverd Here Then Taken South To Richland Springs

On July 14, 1875, the first gun target was set up at Sheridan’s Ranch in Mesquite, Nevada. It was a 50-pounder artillery round that could be fired from a rifle. The Shot Show at the Reno National Park features replicas of these targets today.

The post office closed in 1951, but remain an important part of local history thanks to their role in helping keep the community alive during wartime. After the war, many residents moved away from El Dorado due to economic reasons; however, some continue to live there today because of its unique historical context and access to education opportunities.
El Dorado was a legendary gold mine in southern Arkansas. The site of the mine is now part of the city of Little Rock.
