El Dorado is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,087 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–East Stroudsburg, AR Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit El Dorado was Captain James Cook on his journey circumnavigating Australia in 1770. He named it "New South Wales" because he thought the land looked like new South Wales in England. Mexican traders and travelers visiting Arkansas during the 1800s called it "The Land of Oz." In 1836, Manuel Armijo leased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of what is now El Dorado from Arapaho Chief Moses Marks for $5 per acre ($27 million at current prices). In 1865, General John Custer's 5th Cavalry Division stopped at Fort Smith on their way to Expedition into Mexico City. After Ulysses S. Grant's victory over Confederate General Robert Eagan at Bennett’s Bluff on October 16, 1865 – Ranger Day – white men began streaming into El Dorado from all over Arkansas for what became known as The cattle drive to get their hands on some of the 775 head of roundup beef that Custer had brought back with him from Mexico City. By 1870 there were 10 daily stages running between Little Rock and East Stroudsburg bringing goods and people to and from El Dorado; Stagecoach passengers could buy tickets online or by writing down their destinations before departure and pick them up when they arrived in town. El Dorado prospered as a trading post during the late 1800s due to its location along Route 66 which connected both Missouri and Texas; goods available for purchase included flour, cottonseed oil, tobacco products, eggs and bacon; residents also raised hogs and chickens until around 1930 when power outages made farming difficult; after World War II many businesses closed but most resumed operations by 1980; by 2000 only one business remained open: an insurance company whose employees still conduct funerals today in a large cemetery near town limits

The town that grew up around thebattle site is now called Fort Smith. After the war, El Dorado became one of America's leading fur-producing areas. In 1849, General James Winchester built a small fort at present-day Arkansas City to protect this profitable industry from British traders. El Dorado also served as a location for other important events in Arkansas history: on July 4th, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt made his first visit to that state; on November 3rd, 1920, Fannie Lou Hamer became first African American woman to be elected to Congress from any state when she won her seat in Little Rock; and on May 6th, 2009, the current Presiding Bishop of Arkansas ordained Joseph Estep into the priesthood at New Life Cathedral in downtown Fort Smith.
El Dorado was a settlement in present-day Arkansas that became an important center of the fur trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1799, Captain James Cook discovered El Dorado, which he named for the Great Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) because it seemed to be impossible to find another place with such highanches as those found on North America's continent. The English explorer John C. Black also visited El Dorado in 1811 and claimed the area for Britain. By 1821, many European explorers had located and explored parts of what is now Arkansas; but no permanent settlements were established until 1824 when prospectors pushed out into what is now northeast Arkansas from Texas. The first town in what is now northeast Arkansas was founded by Jacob Astor at Bentonville in 1825 after he purchased land east of Fort Smith. Astor renamed his new settlement "El Dorado" for himself and his partners, David Dudley Harper and Solomon Baird. The site of El Dorado today includes a number of buildings from this early period including the first post office in northwest Arkansas, the Astor House Museum, and the Webb house—the only extant example of a log cabin built in Northwest Arkansas before World War II. In 1830, Daniel Boone introduced horses to westernArkansas through his travelogue "Bald Eagle Scout." This event helped spur development west of Little Rock along I-40 from northcentralArkansas all the way to Oklahoma City. With increasing trade opportunities came increased immigration to northeasternArkansas during this time period: Germans who had been born within range of Memphis began moving into northeastArkansas in significant numbers around 1840; Irish immigrants followed soon afterward; while African Americans started arriving beginning around 1860s as slaves were brought overland from Mississippi River states
