El Dorado is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,769 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by white settlers in 1881. It became a stop on the Red River Gorge Railroad and later served as a stopping point for travelers on the Northern Pacific Railway. A phosphate mine near El Dorado produced valuable goods that helped make the community prosperous during its early years. However, some factors led to its decline over time, including competition from nearby towns and mines and falling commodity prices. In recent years, however, El Dorado has been redeveloping into an attractive community with numerous businesses and restaurants.

In 1836, the U.S. government approved a plan to build a new empire in central Arkansas. The Governor of Arkansas appointed James Fenton as the first Territorial Governor of El Dorado Territory, which was then located east of Little Rock City on the confluence of the Ark and White rivers. Fenton initially named the territory Fort Smith because he thought it would be an easier place to control than El Dorado Territory, which included much more remote terrain. However, within a few years, Fort Smith became one of the most important trading posts in eastern Arkansas because it offered easy access to goods from Missouri and Kansas City. The area that is now El Dorado Territory was part of Spanish Mexico until 1795 when Louisiana seceded from Spain and acquired its own government. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson decided to annex what were then Mexican territories into the United States. As part of this decision, he decided that El Dorado Territory would become part of his new Indian Territories Department and be known as Area C.* The area now comprising El Dorado Territory was specifically chosen for its rich mineral resources- including gold and silver- which could be exploited by American settlers. *Area C did not exist until after Oklahoma acquisition in 1907
El Dorado was a region in central Arkansas that was the main source of wealth and power for the area's Kansa and Cherokee Native American tribes. The region was first settled by French Canadians in the 17th century, and became a center of African slave trade after Britain ceded Louisiana to France in 1803. The area became part of the United States following its victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1865, gold was discovered at El Dorado Creek, which led to an influx of people and development in what is now Arkadelphia. In 1881, Arkansas became a state, and El Dorado County was formed within it. In 1907,Arkansas built the White Sands Missile Range to support World War I efforts; this contributed to Arkadelphia's growth as an agricultural center during that time. In 1947, Arkansas merged with Oklahoma to form the United States of America.
