El Dorado is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock– Fort Smith metropolitan area. The site where El Dorado now stands was once home to an American Indian village known as Mocama. In 1847, General W. H. Fenton's army invaded and defeated the Indians at this location; as a result, El Dorado became part of the United States and was named for General Fenton. In 1872, gold was discovered in Arkansas near what is now El Dorado City; soon thereafter, settlers began arriving to establish businesses and build homes around these discoveries. By 1900, El Dorado had become one of the most important cities in East Arkansas because of its growth in commerce and its location on theComanche River near three major mineral deposits (gold-silver-copper). During World War II, El Dorado played an important role in providing defense against Japanese aggression along the Comanche River Valley. After the war ended, many people returned to their old ways and business boomed again; however, economic recession hit early in the 21st century and has caused some progress to be made since then. Today’s downtown district is still dominated by commercial buildings dating from before World War II: such as The Kress Company store which stood until 1978 when it was replaced by First Interstate Bank & Trust Co.; Union Carbide Building which served as a post office until 1985; Guggenheim Hotel since 1955; and Sears Roebuck & Company building which first opened in 1911 but closed in 1984 after more than 130 years of service (it reopened under new ownership in 2007). However, many residences have been removed over time due to various reasons (such as zoning changes or fire codes changing).

El Dorado is a small town in rural Arkansas, located on the eastern edge of the state. The name means "The Golden City" in Spanish and was given to the community by General George Armstrong Custer during his 1898 expedition into Mexico. In 1907, El Dorado became the first town in Arkansas to be chartered as an official city. The population of El Dorado was 2,611 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1864 by prominent citizens of Little Rock, who migrated from Illinois. The settlers named their new community after King Solomon's Mines—the richest gold mine in history. By 1880, El Dorado had a population of 4,000 people and boasted a library, theater, hotel and several schools. However, economic difficulties led to mass migration out of Arkansas until World War II when El Dorado's population increased to over 10,000 people again due to wartime production across the state. During World War II (1939-1945), El Dorado saw large amounts of military production which generated great wealth for local businesses and individuals alike. Many post-war improvements were made to the community including drive-in restaurants and shopping malls that continue today as part of downtown El Dorado's commercial district. After the war ended, many residents returned home but continued living off farmsteads until 1975 when all farms were sold except one which still remains within town limits today as a museum known as "The Old Factory." Today much of what makes up downtown El Dorada (eastern end) was built following a Campaign for Community Improvement initiated by Mayor Harry Bourgeois in 1989-1990; it included restoration/replacement/updates to sidewalks/paths & streetlights throughout entire business district - creating an engaging pedestrian experience once again!
