El Dorado was an American settlement in what is now Arkansas. The first European to set foot in what is now Arkansas was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, who explored the area in 1541-42. He named the area Santa Rosa de Tejas after a religious shrine he found near present day Fort Smith, Arkansas. In 1795, French traders founded a small colony on the banks of the Red River in present-dayArkansas. The colonists were called "La Motte et La Motte" because they built a stockade around their fort and raised horses and cattle for trade. In 1812, the Missouri Company organized a route across Indian Territory from St. Louis to Nacogdoches, Texas by way of Arkadelphia and El Dorado City on the Arkansas River. The company's agent at Arkadelphia was James Kimerick, who purchased land east of present day El Dorado Springs from Chief Moses Austin for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $27 today). On July 25, 1813, Kimerick erected a wooden storehouse and post office at this site which served as his headquarters until 1840 when he relocated to Fort Smith. By 1830, there were over 100 white settlers living in Arkadelphia; by 1840 only about 30 remained. In 1835, John Coker established himself at nearby Springdale with 300 acres (120 hectares) of land adjacent to Kimerick's original property. In 1840–1841, Coker sold some 1 million acres (500 thousand hectares) of central Cotton States lands east of the Mississippi River for $24 million ($1 million par value). This purchase increasedArkansas' population from 5200 people in 1830 to 11000 by 1840 – all within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of El Dorado City proper where goods could be bought or traded for silver dollars or cotton goods worth millions more than local currency then outstanding! A year later new Mormon missionaries arrived with plans to establish an outpost on land adjoining Springfield but this failed due to bad weather conditions that halted construction two years later on October 15th when heavy rains caused flooding which destroyed much equipment including building material used in constructing buildings! A new mission station was finally established three miles northeast of present day Arkadelphia where Wm Gentry began operations on January 14th 1846 under charge of Elder Jerald F Lee! After establishment Gentry continued missionary work until his death four years later on November 26th 1850 leaving behind an orphaned staff responsible for caring for approximately 12000 sick Kanawha Valley Indians during their winter season! A school also soon opened providing instruction both English and Native American languages before it closed its doors permanently due to lack of funds several years later following Indian removal policy! The town started losing population again starting around 1860 as many families left seeking economic opportunities closer to larger cities like Nashville or Memphis Tennessee while others moved away altogether due to increasing racism towards frontier groups such as Mescalero Apache ranchers!!!! When White citizens regained control over their state legislature they repealed most all laws implemented by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during his tenure as governor beginning February 3rd 1865!!!!! Some 200 pioneers still live within Arkadelphia limits today making it one OF THE LAST AMERICAN SETTLEMENTS IN ARKANSAS TO CONTINUE RECOVERING POPULATION THROUGHOUT THE 1920S AND 1930S

The town of El Dorado was founded on a grant from the British government in 1836, and quickly became a center for trade with neighboring Indian nations. The site that would become Arkadelphia was claimed by both the United States and Great Britain during the antebellum period, but no permanent settlement occurred until afterArkansas became a state in 1876. By 1870, however, Arkadelphia had grown to become one of the largest and most important cities in Arkansas. In 1905, it merged with nearby Mound City to form what is now known as Arkadelphia-Mound City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
