These settlers were called "Oklahoma Territory" settlers because they were not allowed to take any land west of the Missouri River. The town was named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's forces destroyed Fort Smith in 1874 during his invasion of Oklahoma Territory

The first El Dorado was a group of travelers who set out from Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1847. They traveled through the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo León before arriving in Texas in 1848. They were looking for a new home after being displaced by the gold Rush in California. The group arrived at what is now El Dorado County, Arkansas on July 20, 1849.
