Conway is a small, red-hued town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Arkansas River just south of its crossing into northern Little Rock County. The community was named for George H. Conway, a postmaster and judge in Pulaski County from 1871 to 1908. The first permanent settler in what would become Conway was Wm. Denton in 1881. By the early 1920s the community had about seventy residents and consisted of one grocery store and four churches. A bridge over the Arkansas River was built in 1926 by J.B. White and it became known as "The Bridge that Built Conway" because it linked Conway with Little Rock and other nearby communities on the east bank of the river. Conway experienced rapid growth during World War II when many military families moved there to work in munitions factories or service towns such as Fort Smith (now Fayetteville). The population reached 2,000 by 1951 but declined to 1,521 at the 2000 census due to continued suburban development aroundthetown center and lack of business opportunities outside of incorporated areas near Interstate 20/Arkansas Highway 12/. In recent years however, a revival has begun with businesses opening up within walking distance of downtown including several restaurants and bars as well as an art gallery which opened in fall 2006 next door to Conways old post office building which served as both a retail store until 2005 and also featured local artists until that time In 2008 Conway won an award from AAA State Farm for being "the best place to live in Ark."
