Conway, Arkansas is a small town located in southern Benton County, Arkansas. The population was 1,906 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Benton County and its largest city. The name Conway comes from the Cherokee word kowa for "water," which means "the place where water is found." The first person to live in what is now Conway was James Wetherbee. He patented land in 1795 and built a cabin on it. In 1824, Wetherbee's son-in-law, John Wilkinson bought the land and moved his family to the village of Conway. Wilkinson named the post office after himself, but it was renamed Conway in 1898 by General John M. Pershing because he felt that the name would be more memorable to people living nearby than Post Office Park or Jackson Court House. In 1902, J.D. Bigham purchased some land east of town and began developing it into an agricultural center called Bentonville Junction. This original settlement included a hotel, store, blacksmith shop, grain elevator and several homes for farmers and their families who worked on his farm or collected wood from his trees nearby. By 1940 there were only 12 buildings remaining in Bentonville Junction due to demolition by developers during World War II; today only one house remains standing among these ruins! In 1959, when Arkansas became a state independent of Tennessee*, Bentonville Junction became part of Arkadelphia* as well; today both towns have phantom populations according to local folklore†††*. Although much has changed since then (largely thanks to development within Arkadelphia), much remains unchanged about this historic community including its rich history which can be enjoyed by all who visit!

The first white person to reside in Conway was Gideon Butler on May 10, 1817 when he and his family arrived from Illinois. In 1906, both the town and county were named for General John Fenton Conway who served as Commandant of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. On February 24th of that year, Mayor George Waddell dedicated a public park in downtown Conway which still serves as its primary business district today. Conway took its name from General John Fenton Conway who fought in the American Civil War for the Confederacy and later became aniator for Theodore Roosevelt's presidential campaign. Captain John Auld founded what would become known as Old Fort Boone in 1814 while serving with General Andrew Jackson's army during his Creek Expedition against Alabama Native Americans. Afterward he donated land to form what would become downtown Conway after moving his family there from their home near Thibodaux, Louisiana two years earlier. The city formally incorporated on November 2nd of that year by vote of its citizens following a survey taken during Octoberfestivals held throughout Arkansas to determine which cities should be considered for incorporation based on their demographics and potential growth potential. In 1907-1908 new annexations occurred within Pulaski County including nearby Springdale (then called Westphalia) and Russellville making up an area now bounded by Interstate 20 on the east side; Highway 601 to the south; Ulysses S Grant Boulevard to the west; and Little Rock onto which much of present day Pryor lies
