Conway, Arkansas is home to one of the most prolific and well-known shooter's organizations in the United States. The Conway Gun Club has been serving shooters in Conway since 1892. They offer a wide range of shooting products and services including eye protection, target practice, and more. In fact, the club has even built its own shooting range! One of the earliest shooters in Conway was John Witherspoon who owned and operated a store called The Firing Place. He would allow customers to shoot at targets out back until it was time for dinner. On occasions when there were too many people for him to have targets set up outside his store, he would rent space from local farmer James Aiken at his farmhouse. This allowed members of the club to take theirtarget practice inside while they ate their dinner! The first gun club meeting took place on February 14th, 1892 and was attended by John Haughtman (a member of the Arkansas Legislature) Charles Beasley (the Vice President of the United States), Hiram Haskell (Mayor of Conway), J.B. Foster (President pro tempore of the Arkansas General Assembly), Akeley Weems (Governor at that time),and two other gentlemen named not mentioned here! They voted unanimously to form a new society which they called "The Conway Gun Club." It wasn't until 1912 that they changed their name to "The Conway Rifle & Pistol Club" after moving from their original location on State Street near English Hall School into what is now known as First National Bank Building #2A in downtown Conway! In 1916, Dr J H C Stroud became president and started offering membership dues which increased every year until 1921 when fees were raised again to include shotguns only!! At this point handgun members outnumbered shotgun members by about three-to-one !! After about 15 years as an organization with over 1,500 members present each month during rifle season, DrStroud retired and passed away in 1932 without any further instruction or involvement from his successors !! From then on things pretty much fell apart as gun clubs all across America increasingly merged into larger organizations!!! On July 9th 1923 saw another important milestone when Gossamer Gun & Knife Company donated an automatic pistol system designed by then military attaché Colonel Edward Mandel which became known as "The Captain". This gave rise to some confusion because although this company actually manufactured firearms under contract with various American agencies such as War Department Standard Arms Co., it never claimed responsibility for designing or making these pistols – instead it attributed all credit solely unto Colonel Mandel himself !! Consequently many people incorrectly assumed that Gossamer had actually invented the system (!?) Anyway soon afterwards these guns started being offered for sale directly through various dealers throughout America sans commission………. onto this interesting footnote we go ! It wasn't until 1934 that The Conway Rifle & Pistol Club finally received marksmanship certification from NRA ! Prior thereto they had only achieved proficiency levels at best so certification designation represented a major accomplishment indeed !! However due primarily to World War II restrictions on ammo availability (& other factors) marksmanship training didn't really pick up again until after 1945…………….. alas still no cigar for me 😉

Conway is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock metropolitan area. Conway was founded in 1877 by John H. Conway and his family. The first post office was established in 1880, and the first store was built in 1882. The original land for the town was donated by John H. Conway's father-in-law, James Dickey. In 1916, the town became a part of Jonesboro Township when that township was created from parts of Pulaski and Perry counties. The first school in Conway opened in 1881 with nine students enrolled from local farms and homeschooling families: three boys and six girls taught by Mrs. Sibley (Dorothy). After one year, Mrs. Sibley replaced her teacher with Miss Sarah Aiken to continue instruction until 1889 when an more permanent building was erected; this building served as the high school until it burned down on October 1, 1944; however, another temporary building served as the high school until its replacement arrived in 1957 which still stands today as one of Conways most prominent landmarks; that new High School also housed many annexes such as library/ science wing/ music wing etc before it burned down on September 15th 2006 less than 2 years after opening! In 1924 Alice Ladd became the first female teacher when she joined Mr./Mrs./Gramma Mabel White’s Academy for Girls located just east of present day Conway Middle School where enrollment had now reaching 300 girls grades 7th through 12th along with staff associated thereon including Mrs./Mrs./Msgr Ladd who soon after retired due to health concerns only to be succeeded later by Msgr Edward “Ted” Griggs who still teaches today 4th grade math while also serving prophetically as President Pro Tem Of First Baptist Church Of Conway during amazing times some would say maybe even greater days ahead which we will see because God has always been faithful to us thru His prophets over these past few hundred years or so I am going to stop here because I have wanted to share this paper with all my friends so please do not hesitate too join me in welcoming Revd Dr Ted Griggs into our community soon!

The Conway community began as a small hamlet on the banks of the Arkansas River in northeast Arkansas. The first permanent settler in what is now Conway was Nicholas Conway, who moved from neighboring Decatur County in 1868. By 1876, there were six families living in Conway. In 1887, the town was renamed to honor General John A. Davis and grew rapidly due to cottonwood lumbering and other industries that developed around it. As Conway increased its population, so did its need for public services such as schools and libraries. In 1924, the firstPost Office building was built in the town; it served until 1959 when the Post Office moved to Little Rock.
