Conway, Arkansas is a small town located in Benton County,Arkansas. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Benton County. Conway was founded in 1871 by Simeon Witherspoon and named for General James A. Conway who led the Union forces during the American Civil War. The first store was built in1872 on Main Street and operated until 1978 when it burned down. In 1984, a new store building was erected on an site across from the old store on First Avenue North. The original store building has been preserved as part of the town Historical Museum which is open to the public weekdays 9 am to 4 pm from April through October (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas). The post office operated from 1871-1978 and again from 1984-1993 before being discontinued due to budget cuts. In 1907, Jno Ligon bought land off of US Highway 6 near present day Conway and beganbuilding a dam which would provide irrigation water for his farmsteads which now include over 20 buildings including 8 churches, 2 hospitals, 3 schools, 2 jails and 3 stores. Ligon's dam remains in use today as a recreational area known as "Lake Ligon". The first person to settle in Conway was John Hines who arrived with his family in 1868 from Ohio via Kentucky. He farmed about two hundred acres northeast of present day Conway until he died in 1902 leaving behind four children: Hines Jr., Anna (née McNaught), John Pugh Jr.,and Alice (née Whitworth). With no extended family to help him out during his lifetime he had to build himself a home orchards and vineyards alone; this type of isolation only served to drive him harder towards community service later on life! After John's death his widow continued farming with her three sons working together till their own deaths also leaving behind vast acreage & gardens! In 1924 local hardware dealer Dolphus Snively opened up one of Arkansass earliest auto repair shops serving both locals & visitors alike - what would become known as Snively's Garage quickly became an institution within Conway thanks largely to its convenient location just off US Highway 6A right opposite modern day Lakeview Elementary School! Due mainlyto Snively’s hard work & dedication many infrastructure projects throughout Benton County were funded thru grants received by then Governor Orval Faubus & later President George HW Bush! This airport served as a major factor for growth of Conway over time with its new shopping center along Airport Boulevard and its modern buildings including several hotels and two restaurants which remain today icons within that once small town atmosphere In 1971 tiny Vaughn became an incorporated city with an estimated population of 3 people due to annexations from other towns within Pulaski County concurrent with that year's general election which saw President Richard Nixon win re-election with 54% ofthe vote over incumbent Gerald Ford who received 44%. In 1976 voters approved a proposition to make Conway an independent city limits voting by certified ballot rather than through local elections then held every six years There have been no annexations since then although population growth has continued at around 1% each decade while spending has grown more slowly reflecting economic recessionary trends across much of Arkansas
