Conway is a small, rural town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. In 1916, coal mining became an important economic sector in Conway after newly mined coal deposits were discovered near modern-day Mountain View Cemetery outside of town limits (then known as "Indian Hills"). As this industry grew more significant, so too did demand for services provided by local businesses such as churches and schools which could not function without reliable postal service; accordingly, municipal leaders decided to build their own post office just north of town limits along US 66 until such time as an existing annex could be built south of US 66 proper within reason given traffic congestion caused by increasing mail volumes generated by both land development east of US 66 as well as interstate truck traffic crossing intoLittle Rock through section 7129). This decision likely had something to do with concerns about who would maintain justice between townships located immediately adjacent to one another – namely Little Rock and North Little Rock – when larger municipalities like Pine Bluff began seeking increased access to Interstate 20 through sections 7129/2710 while eastern residents continued opposing any increase whatsoever within their borders (I-20 construction projects taking precedence over public transportation investments). As commercial activities mushroomed around downtown Conway during World War II (due largely to wartime production shortages), residential development took hold around Highway 65/ concurrent with military housing developments just beyond milepost 9 on that highway; thus little attention was paid towards developing downtown versus providing separate facilities for commerce/government operations respectively when those buildings were first constructed during that era let alone still extant today despite numerous expansions/modifications over time including erection of numerous large addition(s) atop existing structure(s)). Consistent with this pattern across most all American communities during those heady early days following world war II (+/- 50 years), overnight redevelopment characterized most inner city neighborhoods following major wars whereas rural areas generally experienced stability or decline due largely to lack thereof +/+ 25 years later When I entered Downtown Conway for my first job out [of] college circa 1978 everything had changed! The old downtown business district had been completely rebuilt & enlarged using much federal money which we turned into our core tourist area! You can see all these new businesses everywhere you look today: bars & restaurants open late...a big mall has opened up next door...and yet back then there wasn’t even a streetlight out there! Today's Downtown Conway features many familiar faces...including mainstay merchants Hooters & Steakhouse - whose restaurant fronts onto Main Street - as well as several convenience stores plus several smaller shops clustered around Main Street...just off Highway 65 are several hotels including Renaissance Ark Encounter Resort Airport Marriott since they bought property along the road back in 2010)...and finally Jack Daniels' Bottle Shop which has been here since 1959! Conway was founded in 1871 by Hiram Conway, a local resident. The town grew quickly and by 1900 had a population of over 100 people. In 1922, the town was renamed Conway after General Joseph E. Johnston, the general who led Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
