Conway and his brother-in-law, Hernando W. Franks as an agricultural community on the edge of a coal field that had been developed by John Wesley Hardin and others. The first post office in Conway opened in 1883. At the time, Conway was located about five miles east of what is now Fayetteville and thirteen miles west of modern day Little Rock. Conway quickly became known for its manufacturing capabilities: farmers used to bring their crops to be processed here into flour, feed grains to animals or make shoe leather; manufacturers produced everything from radios and televisions to cars and appliances. In addition to its manufacturing industry, Conway also became known for its nightlife: during prohibition it was one of the few places where alcohol could be bought openly without going through a cocktail partyrier or special license; later it became one of the most popular tourist destinations for people visiting Pulaski County because of its convenient location close to many attractions including historical sites such as Fort Smith and Arkadelphia. In 1960, when Pulaski County merged with neighboring Decatur County, Conway became the new county seat – although it still retains some autonomy over local affairs such as voting procedures and zoning regulations (the town has a total population density lower than that of any other municipality in Pulaski County). When Decatur merged with Jefferson City into Johnson City proper in 2013, however, all reverted back to Conway's jurisdiction within Pulaski County while continuing to retain all cultural significance associated with both towns including cultural events such as art shows and horror movies shown at venues like The Pavilion Theatre until 2019 when they were moved out into Johnson City proper again due to concerns over parking availability within the city limits (although this decision has since been rescinded).
