In 1976, the town changed its name to Conway after General George Hinton Conway Jr., an officer in World War I and later Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of state (1869-1877). Conway's economy depends largely on agriculture; however, there are also some small businesses involved in manufacturing and tourism. One major industry is food processing which contributes to Conways nickname as "The Grit Town". Conway is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,758 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Fayetteville–Monticello Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Conway was William Hickey who came to the area from Kentucky in 1827. Hickey and his family built a log cabin on what is now US Highway 6 and named it "Hitchcock's Cabin." In 1828, Jno. Craddock purchased land east of Conway from Hickey and began to develop it into a village. He named the settlement after Nathaniel Hill Conway, an Englishman who had settled in North America in 1775 and established a trading post near present-day Jacksonville, Florida. Craddock's Village grew quickly and by 1830 had a school, church, store, blacksmith shop, two shotguns worth $10 each, four horses worth $20 each, three wagons with six axles each and fifty acres ( eighteen hectares) of farmland cultivation including cotton plantations owned by Captain John Thornton and others. In 1836 Governor James Ketchum erected for white pioneers the first bridge over Arkansas River at what is now Conway; this marked an important advance for settlers as transportation became available for goods transported down the river to Little Rock. By 1840 there were six stores in operation along U Street between Main Street (now US Highway 63) and Winchester Road (now US Highway 348). By 1850 there were ten stores; three Methodist churches; one Baptist church; one Odd Fellows lodge; one jail; two schools - one public school for children 9-12 years old which opened on April 14th1851 under teacher Miss Euphemia Pughs instruction; One gristmill equipped with power fanning gear which ground flour until 1861 when mechanical grinding equipment arrived from Illinois It also produced cheese that became well known within Arkansas A mill race was built across the Arkansas River where current US Highway 6 crosses it to bring water to the millrace from upstream sources before being exported downstream via a channel formed by damming up the stream below Arsenal Plantation Dam
On July 4, 1864, Conway became the capital of Arkansas. On November 3, 1907, Conway was named as the state's first city.
