Conway is an unincorporated community in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by Means and Wright as a post office. The community name derived from the initial location of the post office on the White River. In 1935, Conway became a town when it was added to Pulaski County. As of 2015, Conway had a population of 458 people.
Conway was first settled in 1827 by a group of Methodist missionaries, led by Reverend J.H. Conway. The town grew quickly and soon had a school, store, and jail. In 1835, the United States Congress created the Arkansas Territory, which included much of present-day Conway County. The territory was divided into five counties – Benton, Conway, Fayetteville, Harrisonburg, and Whiteley – and Conway became one of the county seats. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down part of the courthouse in Conway. The Union forces retaliated with artillery fire that destroyed several buildings in town. In 1865 the Union troops withdrew from Arkansas after Confederate General Robert Ewell's victory at Gettysburg. The post office remained open until 1921 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service to most of rural Arkansas. Today, many small businesses operate in Conway thanks to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas like Memphis and Little Rock; as well as international airports like Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth. Many residents continue to commute to larger cities for employment or education opportunities outside of Conway County.
