Conway is an unincorporated community in Searcy County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Jefferson City, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Conway was founded in 1881 by J.C. and Fannie Conway with a post office named "Newburgh". The post office moved to its current location in 1887 and remained until it closed in 1912. The first settler in Conway was Isaac Hixon who arrived on October 4, 1881. He also built the first house there which still stands today. Other early settlers were John Schieffer, Hiram Hebert and James Whitehead who all arrived between 1881 and 1882. The first store opened in Conway on July 10, 1886 by Augustus Berryman with Wm Hutcheson as the owner/manager. In 1907, P O'Neill became the store manager after leaving his position as deputy sheriff of Searcy County for Texas A&M University Medical School where he had been teaching since 1906. The store continued to be run by O'Neill until it closed on December 15, 1928 due to financial difficulties which were caused by the Great Depression which was hitting Arkansas hard at that time. Thereafter Store No 1 reopened under new ownership on January 3rd 1929 from Harry Vought with Mr & Mrs Lillie Knight being operators during that initial period before moving out to their present location next door on November 6th 1931 when they purchased land from Ethel Alger for $1 per acre giving them a total of . Thereafter they continued to operate as a grocery store under different management until 1984 when they merged with SouthernArkansas Grocery Co Inc (later known as Ark-La-Tex Supermarkets) becoming one of Ark-La-Tex's largest employers with over 1,000 employees across twelve locations throughout Northwest Arkansas including Conway; Mountain Home; Fort Smith; Rogers;vellsburg; Wynnefield; Carthage Springs and finally Springfield - becoming one of Ark-La-Tex's supercenters located inside Arkadelphia mall just outside Little Rock!
