Conway is a small city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Conway history begins with pioneers who arrived in 1821 when Isaac Dunham and his family set up a trading post on the Arkansas River. The town name originated from Indian Chief Conways Hill. By 1836, the town had grown to include a school, store and several families. A tornado struck Conway on November 9th of that year causing $5,000 damage to the business and houses. In 1873, Congress passed an act allowing for statehood for Arkansas; Conway was selected as its capital. On December 15th of that year the first session of the State Legislature took place in Conway under new government rules which allowed for elected officials other than white men to serve in local governments (this change would later be repealed). In 1898, after passage of the National Defense Appropriation Act (), lead developer John D’Arcy donated land east of present-day Conway for what would become White Sulphur Springs Resort & Casino; today's casino opened its doors in 2001. On July 1st of every year since 1985, Conway celebrates its anniversary by holding a street fair called "Fiesta de las Flores". Today's economy relies heavily on tourism due to both its natural resources (especially oil) as well as its rich antique and historical heritage. With over two dozen businesses located throughout town including service stations/convenience stores/, MARTA bus stop (), general store (),about 30 restaurants ().There are also numerous art galleries (~10), motels and bed & breakfasts across town offering accommodations near downtown or nature trails close by
Conway was founded in 1871 by J. G. Conway, a white farmer and surveyor. The town was named for General John A. Conway, who had served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. In 1901, the United States Postal Service moved its post office from Little Rock to Conway, citing a lack of other postal facilities in the area. The first postmaster was H. Fenton Grogan. The Arkansas School of Mines and Technology (ASMT) was founded in Conway in 1962 as one of the state's first higher educational institutions; it remains one of the largest private schools in Arkansas today with over 2,000 students registered for classes Fall 2010 through Spring 2011. ASMT is also home to two professional colleges: The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and WesternArkansas Community College System – Conway Campus ().
