CAMDEN, Ark. - Camden began its history as a trading post on the Arkansas River in 1837 and quickly became an important center for trade. In 1852, Camden was named the capital of the Confederate States of America and served as the seat of government until 1865. In 1886, Camden was destroyed by fire and from then on it struggled to keep up with the growth of the city. However, through hard work and determination, Camden emerged as one of Arkansas' most successful cities. The city's economy thrived thanks to its manufacturing sector, which included such well-known brands as Singer Sewing Machines and Wheaties Cookie Bites. Throughout its history, Camden has been a fiercely independent community that has refused to let its size or location stop it from achieving success. Today, Camden is known for its vibrant nightlife and vibrant downtown area which preserves much of its historical charm.

Camden is a small city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The name Camden comes from "Canandaigua", a Cherokee word meaning "place where people assemble." The town was founded by General Hugh Mercer in 1836 as part of a land grant to him from President James K. Polk. The town was renamed Camden after General John Camden who fought against the Seminole Indians and helped make Arkansas into an American state. In 1894, the first black person to be admitted to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was named Cecil Grant Shriver and he attended Clarendon School for Boys which then became known as Central High School for Blacks. In 1903, when white primary school students were transferred from Southside Elementary School in downtown Camden to Northside Elementary School on Walnut Street because that street had been renamed Providence Avenue after Presbyterian Medical Center opened there, black children attending West Side Elementary also transferred to Northside Elementary; thisgement continues today with each elementary school's student body split evenly between white and black students while still using their original names (e.g., Cherry Hill Middle School – White only). In 1960, when Pulaski County merged with neighboring Fayette County, Camden became one of four new towns forming Fayetteville Township (the other three being Van Buren, Ark.; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; and Jonesboro). In 1994–1996, City Hall moved from its original building on Third Street in downtown Camden to what is now First Baptist Church across the street from City Hall Annex Building - a move that helped improve access for residents who had long relied on Second Street as their main thoroughfare within town limits. In 2000–2002 Mayor Royce Freeman announced plans for development near First Baptist Church called Gateway Development which would see two new shopping malls built along I-40/I-24: One east of I-40 on Highway 147 about 5 miles south of Interstate 20 and one west of I-240 about 8 miles north of Interstate 30 (the latter project has since stalled). In 2006 voters approved Measure M which increased sales taxes by 2% statewide and 2% per capita within Pulaski County until 2018; this increase funded local government needs such as road construction and public safety upgrades including more police officers available during peak hours as well as increasing funding for affordable housing. Camden has also seen growth in recent years due to heavy investment brought about by both big business interests looking to set up shop in what was once an agricultural area as well as crosstown migration among Arkansans seeking cheaper living costs but also better schools and opportunities than they found elsewhere—a trend that’s expected continue over time amid growing competition around the state experiencing high levels of economic development (+10%). In 1868, Camden was founded by John A. White and his family. The town was named after the Camden River that ran through it. It grew rapidly during the 1870s and 1880s, thanks to development of railroads and other businesses. By 1915, Camden had a population of around 2,000 people. In the 1920s, Camden experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on the Arkansas River at the heart of the cotton industry. However, World War II led to a decline in population in Camden until the late 1960s when it began to experience significant growth again due to new industrialization in nearby Memphis and Little Rock.
