It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first permanent settler in Camden was John White on July 15, 1853. The town was platted on November 3, 1857 by Samuel J. Fenton and named after General James Longstreet of the Confederate States Army who fought in the Battle of Bull Run during the American Civil War. The post office at Camden served from December 4, 1857 to February 10, 1861 due to its location near Fort Smith and Fort Sumter; it reopened on October 1, 1861. The town's incorporation took place on January 24, 1860 under authority of Act No. 9 of that year which authorizes municipal government within a radius thereof “of one mile (2 km)” from any public meeting house or public square where citizens may assemble for local purposes such as discussing grievances with their political representatives or celebrating local events such as fairs and festivals
Camden was founded in 1837 by Daniel Camden. It is the only city in Arkansas and the second largest city in the state after Little Rock. The population of Camden peaked at over 100,000 in 1940, but has since declined to around 50,000.
