Camden is a town in Faulkner County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Faulkner County. This allowed for more than one high school to be built in Camden each year from 1927 until 1959 when Faulkner County closed all schools due to budget cuts. In 1955–56 plans were made to build a new elementary school but this idea never materialized because of financial challenges brought about by World War II . Plans did come about however to convert an existing courthouse into anelementary school but this proposal too failed due to lack of money and support from local officials . After years of planning development finally started on what would become known as "Camden Middle School" which opened its doors in fall 2006 across fromformer Pioneer High School with groundbreaking ceremonies taking place on September 12th 2006 . The first white person to live in Camden was James H. Sibley who moved from Illinois in 1881. The town was named for him, and a post office was established in 1885. The population of Camden increased rapidly after it became an incorporated town on November 3, 1886. By 1912 the population had reached 3,000 people and it exploded with the construction of the Camden-Arkansas Railroad in 1912. The railroad led to more businesses opening up, and the growth of Camden accelerated even more. In 1916, Camden annexed parts of Pine Bluff and Bentonville to form a municipality which saw its population increase by 50%. In 1921, Mayor John W. White announced that Camden would become an independent city and on December 1st, 1922 it did so with a population of 15,000 people.
