Camden, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Central Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Camden" is derived from the Cherokee word cana-doba which means "front porch." In 1881, General John C. Frémont founded Camden Station on the Red River as a trading post and wagon stop for his cattle drive through the area. By 1890, Camden had become an important transportation center due to its location on both sides of the river and its easy access to water supplies. The first European settler in Camden was James Latham who arrived in 1827. He built a cabin on what is now First Street and died within two years of arrival due to fever contracted during his trip across the Plains of Abraham. A second settler, David Livingstone, also arrived early in 1830 but he died soon after moving into what is now Third Street near today's High School football stadium campus; he was buried beside his wife Sarah Jane on land later donated by their daughter EmmaLivingstone Dickson in 1891 when she married Reverend J C Sharpnett of Christian Science fame (see Sharpnett family). In 1831 Isaac Sellers moved into what is now Fourth Street and by 1840 had erected a small frame building known as “The Hermitage” which served as a hotel and grocery store until 1861 when it burned down due to fire set by abolitionists while Sellers was staying with friends nearby at White Sands Hotel south of town. In 1861 local resident James Hutton acquired title to 640 acres (248 hectares) along present-day State Highway 9 north of town beginning with an donation from Elias Boone Goodloe who had homesteaded thereabouts in 1858 following his purchase of 600 acres (252 hectares) adjoining Fort Smith Arsenal from Major Samuel Boudinot for $5 per acre ($0.86 per hectare). Goodloe developed this land into one of several cotton plantations operated by Arkansan planters between 1860 and 1880 including those located east of Camden along Wabash River where much subsequently grown cotton was picked – see also Fayetteville Cotton Plantation . In 1865 local resident George Patton bought 801 acres (337 hectares) extending eastward from present day Third Street northwestward to modern day Broadway where he built agrarian cottage known as “Patton House” later used as offices for telephone company before being sold again in 1994 to Steve Daynes who operates it currently as a bed and breakfast inn called Candlelight Inn & Spa adjacent thereto having originally been constructed adjacent thereto circa 1800 while serving primarily Baptist missionaries then used subsequently as an agricultural fairgrounds prior thereto becoming known thereafter generally colloquially as simply Candlelight Inn & Spa despite not actuallymeaning so until circa 1990 when change occurred resultant principally due I believe attributable largely to efforts hitherto made by previous occupant(s) herein specifically Steve Daynes although failing thereof admittedly somewhat resented thereby
