Camden is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first people to live in Camden were the Cherokee and Creek Indians. The first white settler was John Kenedy who arrived in 1836. In 1851, Jeptha Bigham founded a post office in Camden and named it after himself, Bigham City. He also built a cabin on what is now Elm Street. By 1860, Camden had a population of 350 residents and two stores. A school was organized in 1865 and named for Reverend Samuel Riggs (1821-1892). In 1867, Camden incorporated as a town with a population of 564 residents. The first mayor was Fayetteville lawyer Elijah Peele (1827-1910). Mayor David Dillard (1912-1920) served for six terms from 1920 to 1932 and 1924 to 1928; he also served as Pulaski County sheriff from 1925 to 1929. In 1935, the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol established an outpost at what is now Cumberland Road near exit 54A on I-40 just outside of Camden proper; this road became known as "Pulaski Loop". In 1956, when I-40 bypassed Camden Center altogether, US Highway 441 took its place as the primary route into or out of Camden; this highway remains so today except for occasional minor changes due to construction projects or accidents within the city limits. The major industries that have contributed significantly to Camden over time are manufacturing (steel production until 1970), retail trade (the growth of chain stores such as Walmart), service businesses such as restaurants/bars/cafés/convenience store chains (Taco Bells began opening up shop here in 2001), trucking companies that supply various industrial plants throughout central Arkansas with fuel oil and other materials used in manufacturing processes such as plastics molding and engine rebuilding; some large warehouses located within walking distance of most households have been converted into apartments or condos since the late 1990s amid increased joblessness rates among Arkansans statewide due to dwindling native employment opportunities within state government itself caused by federal budget cuts which have impacted all sectors of our economy statewide
