During this time, Camden also gained notoriety for its large African American population which contributed to its nickname "the black metropolis." After many years of steady progress, however, economic decline began to take hold in Camden following the early 1990s recession and has continued since then; leading to decreasing jobs opportunities and increased poverty levels among residents. Despite these challenges, some residents continue to work hard towards building positive community relationships through various programming such as education initiatives or arts programs that focus on engaging young people from low-income families or those from minority backgrounds; both within and outside of the city limits
