The first European to set foot in what is now Camden was Captain John Smith on July 24, 1607 when he and his men explored the present day Arkansas River valley from its mouth to its headwaters in what is now Monroe County. On October 7, 1775 General Jonathan Heintzelman led an army from Fort Donelson upstream towards what would become Camden after having marched through much of central and northern Arkansas during the American Revolution. In 1847 three steamboats built by Nicholas Graves ran aground at Grand Gulf on the main stream known today as White’s Fork of theArkansas River just northwest of Camden; these vessels were salvaged and reassembled and renamed “Arkansas Queen”, “Arkansas Princess” and finally “Arkansas Star” before they were scrapped in 1903–04 at Blakely Shipbuilding Company shipyard nearby. When white settlement began along the Arkansas River Valley it was necessary for people to travel great distances upriver to get goods that could be sold or bartered for trade goods with Native Americans who inhabited that region including those living near where Camden now stands. In order to promote transportation along this early route builders constructed several bridges over streams which became important routes for commerce between settlements along both sides of the river including Camden itself as well as other towns downstream such as North Little Rock and Central Arkadelphia. These structures have been contributing heirs to some $10 million in infrastructure improvements made within their boundaries since 1800 alone! With these examples in mind one can appreciate how significant Camden has become not only because it has long been a center of industry but also because it has seen so many responses throughout history – good or bad – that have shaped our current place!
The first European settlers in Camden were French Huguenots who arrived in 1720. The town was founded by Colonel John Nicholson in 1730, and became a part of the Union Territory of Arkansas in 1835. In 1879, Camden was renamed for General James G. Polk, U.S. President from 1840 to 1846.
