The first settler in Camden was John Marshall who arrived in 1837. The first post office opened in 1839 and became known as Camden Station. The only other occupant of this site until 1860 was Baptist preacher Elijah Price who established a school there that year to provide education for his congregation's children. In 1863 Price sold his holdings to local merchant George Winton and continued to operate it as an educational institution until his death in 1865. In 1865 cotton ginnery operator Prentice Ladd bought Price's land, built a grist mill on it, and began producing cottonseed oil for sale to local merchants including Winton and himself. He continued operations until 1888 when he sold all his holdings except for the mill which he operated until 1903 when it went out of business due to lack of support from the industry during the great depression years In 1881 Prentice Ladd's son-in-law Jethro Fenton acquired title to what would become known as "Fenton Place" adjacent to "Ladd's Mill". With its access by private road only through a narrow winding trackleading down a long hillside flanked by high trees (technically still extant), Fenton Place quickly became one of Camden's most prestigious addresses while serving primarily as an intimate community estate used by wealthyArkansas businessmen such as Jethro Fenton Sr., Cimarron Jay Gould,and William Hirschfeld After becoming involved with various businesses throughout its history including operating scores of restaurants over many years before going bankrupt in 1978 due largely to competition from interstate highways development; Cecil Blythe & Sons Paper Merchants Inc., later renamed Cenex Corporation reorganized its paper supply operations within four months after opening its new distribution center just south of town near Interstate 40; throughout these changes Fortissimo Bakery remained unchanged continuing uninterrupted operation along Elm Street corner Main Street since 1945 — this last fact being so consistent that parts even still bear their original factory doors! The town's economy declined after World War II because of the decline of agriculture inArkansas and lack of new industry.
