Camden is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Pulaski County and one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Arkansas. Arlington Township was organized as a village on December 4, 1872, from parts of Camden and Whatleytown. On January 1, 1903, Arlington Township became a city with a population of 910. On May 3, 1907, Camden became an incorporated town with a population of 2,500. The growth of Camden has been attributed to its location on the Arkansas River between Little Rock and Jonesboro; its potential for cargo shipping along the river; and its access to major highways such as I-40 and U.S. Highway 606. For many years it functioned as an agricultural center with cotton plantations and other crops growing along the riverbanks; but in recent years more manufacturing operations have come to Camden including aluminum products from Alcoa Inc., clothing items from Sears Roebuck & Co., computers from HPE Inc., electronic equipment from component supplier Linear Technology Corp., artificial turf installed by Puma Athletic Systems LLC., and homebuilding supplies from Home Depot Stores Inc.. The inhabitants are known as "CAMDENians." They are descendants of early settlers who arrived in what is now Camden during the early 1800s following President James Kansa's search for land that could be used for cattle ranching or farming after his purchase of land near Fort Smith (now Little Rock). The first white settler in what is now Camden was Edwin Booth who purchased land east of present day Arlington Road on November 10th 1887. He named his tract "Booth's Prairie" after himself and his son Edwin Booth II who also took possession of some property adjoining him across the river which he named "Booth's Ferry". After several months' worth survey work by two men dispatched by Kansa - Isaac Neely and John Hinkley - they had determined that there were no suitable sites further downriver for farming purposes so they returned upriver to report their findings to their leader only to find that Kansa had already sold all his holdings upstream including "Booth's Prairie". In 1893 A&P store founder Sam Reeves opened a store at what is now northwest corner Main Street/Upper Avenue (northwest corner current Main Street) adjacent to where modern Day Arlington Road meets Interstate 40 just south of downtown Little Rock
