Bryant, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 2,772 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The most recent resident to die in Bryant was Lloyd Penty on October 25th, 2014. The first gun case in Bryant was recorded on November 8th, 1881 when John and Jennie Lewis brought their shotgun into the store to sell. At that time, there were only two stores in Bryant and they both sold guns. A few weeks later, the Lewis family opened a station wagon dealership and started selling handguns as well. In 1886, John Lewis passed away and his children took over management of the store and dealership. They continued to sell handguns until 1898 when prohibition began enforcement in Arkansas. The last handgun sale happened on May 4th of that year. By this time, all but two of the stores had closed down due to prohibitionism combined with high taxes levied by local officials (the other store continued to function until 1912). The Buchanan County seat is Bryant and the largest city in the area is North Little Rock. The community was platted in 1881 by John Bryant, a resident of nearby Pine Bluff. He named it after his brother-in-law, James Buchanan, 3rd Viscount Brackenridge (1784-1857), who had been U.S. Minister to Russia from 1825 to 1828 and later served as Secretary of War under President James K. Polk (1849-58). In 1907, Lillie Ewing organized the first Baptist church in Bryant and dedicated it on May 25th that year. The present Baptist church was built in 1925 and renovated in 2009/2010 with funds from donors including Ike Skelton Sr., daughter of Iola Skelton Johnson who founded Arkadelphia Agricultural College (now Arkadelphia University) in 1949 and raised money for scholarships for local students through her foundation . Other churches have since been added to the congregation including Methodist (1930), Pentecostal (2002), Lutheran (1968), Presbyterian (1991), Independent Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Jehovah's Witnesses - African American Apostolic Missionaries - Second Adventist Church - First Baptist Churches Association; Assemblies of God; Unitarian Universalist Association; African Methodist Episcopal Church - United States District #2; First Presbyterian Church of Bryant & North Little Rock
Bryant was founded in 1873 by John Bryant and his wife, Sarah. The town quickly developed into a transportation center due to its location at the junction of the Arkansas and Missouri rivers. In 1907, the Bryant family purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of Bryant on West Monroe Street, which became known as the University Park area. The Bryants continue to own and operate the University Park area today.
