The community was named after Bryant Ranch, a cattle ranch that once thrived in this area. The town was founded in 1907 by C.F. Bryant and J.L. Hinton as a small farming village near what is now Arkadelphia. In 1911, the first post office opened in the town and it grew rapidly from there until it reached its peak population of about 12,000 in 1960. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, agriculture began to decline in Bryant due to innovations like Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller and other advances made by farmers elsewhere in Arkansas that made growing crops more difficult and expensive than ever before. By 2000, most of the buildings from when Bryant had its heyday were gone and all that remained were some remaining farms and a few churches which serve as community centers today. Today, much of what used to make up Bryant are still seen here but many of the people who live here have moved on or left for greener pastures elsewhere over the years- some permanently while others have taken advantage of local businesses that have sprung up aroundtown since then to keep things active despite lack of major development nearby (although there are occasional efforts to bring back old buildings). In 1935, however, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Bryant as one of ten "bust Regions" for areas that were experiencing rapid economic decline due to competition from other states' cotton crops. Bryant is a city in Furnace County, Arkansas. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were 8,948 people living in Bryant. The first settler in what is now Bryant was Levi Rogers who arrived on November 5, 1817. The town site was surveyed and named after General John Custer during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1837, Bryant was platted as a town by Major James Mclntyre and Daniel Fenton. The Post Office opened on December 21st, 1837 and closed on February 14th of the following year due to lack of business. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down Union barracks located in downtown Bryant while troops were being withdrawn from the area for garrison duty elsewhere inArkansas. This event is generally considered to be one of the most devastating acts of terror against American civilians during the American Civil War. - On July 15th 1918 an explosion occurred at a munitions depot just outsideofBryant killing two workers and injuring twenty four others
