Bryant was founded in 1892 by W. H. Bryant and J. A. Smith as a small town on the Arkansas River. The town grew to become a large, semi-rural community with a population of over 1,000 people in 1902. In 1907, Bryant became the county seat of Johnson County when it was created from parts of Pulaski and Bradley counties.
