The Blytheville, Arkansas community of over 10,000 people was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his partners James Fenton and George Washington Smith. The town was named for the large wooded area to the north of it that had been forested by the Morgans since they came to Arkansas in 1859. Blytheville grew quickly due to its location on a major trade route between Waco, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee. Numerous businesses were established in the town during its early years including a hotel, grocery store, lumberyard, post office, millinery store and many more. In 1907 J.P. Morgan donated land to make way for what is now Blytheville High School which would later become one of the largest high schools in Arkansas. The school continued growing until it became too large for its current facility in 1949 and moved to its present site across from Walmart on Broadway Street. During World War II Blytheville saw an influx of refugees from Nazi Germany who were displaced by the war effort along with other residents who lost their homes or businesses as a result of Allied bombing raids over southern Arkansas during that time period. Many of these refugees settled into small neighborhoods surrounding Blythville while others found new homes elsewhere in Arkansas or further eastward throughout the United States after their wartime experiences ended. After World War II many members of the local military community relocated to Blythville following their discharge from service either through relocation programs administered by state agencies or through self-relocation efforts led by individual servicemen and women.} In 1957 both banks which once serviced Blytheville closed their doors forever leaving little economic impact on the community aside from nostalgia among some older residents for what may have been} Once again development within the boundaries of Blytheville ensued with several new establishments opening up throughout much of late 1990s} Some notable additions include an internet café (now known as "Cactus"), two music stores (respectively "Jazz" & "Rhapsody"), a restaurant called "The KFC", a medical clinic (now known as Stonington Healthcare) and most recently Aveda Salon}.
