Blytheville is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington metropolitan area. Blytheville is known for its shopping and dining options as well as its history. Blytheville began as a small town on the edge of Fort Smith (now Arkadelphia) in 1877. It was named after Virginia Blyth, an American woman who came to Arkansas with her family in 1836 and became one of the first women to learn how to read and write. The original settlers were farmers who moved from Illinois and Indiana early in the 19th century to find new land that would offer them stability and opportunity. The town's growth came about because of two things: First, railroad transportation made it easier for people to get around than it had been before; second, Fort Smith became a major military base during World War I which attracted businesses and residents alike. After the war ended, Fort Smith gradually lost its importance until it was renamed Blytheville in 1924 when a local relief organization decided that the name would befitting a community that had grown so rapidly since its establishment. The post office closed in 1971 but mail continued to be delivered through private carriers until 1975 when Amtrak introduced their own service into Pulaski County. That same year saw the opening of what is now Blytheville's only restaurant – The Golden Nugget – which quickly became popular among locals and tourists alike for its delicious food and easy access to everything they needed within minutes' walk or less. As development continued to happen around town throughout the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s – including several high-rise buildings being built on Main Street – there has been no lack of activity or progressiveness within Blytheville itself. In fact, many people believe that if it weren't for all of this growth happening over time then maybe nobody would even know about what happened here back when! Since 2005, Blytheville has seen an influx of refugees from Syria due to airstrikes there; however, despite some initial opposition from some residents this trend has slowly started turning positive as more people have learned about our history and culture from those living here now than ever before! Blytheville is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock Metropolitan Area. Blytheville was founded by Josephine and George Blythe in 1875 as a cotton plantation named "Blytheville" after Mrs. Blythe's sister-in-law. The town was platted in 1878 and named for Mrs. Blythe's daughter Bessie Belle Timberlake who had been born there in 1872. The first post office was established in 1880, and the first store opened in 1881. In 1886, when it became known as "Blythville", the town had a school and one grocery store. In 1893, the name was changed to "Blytheville" again due to objections from some people who felt that it sounded like an English word (despite its initial spelling). In 1907, the mayor of Birmingham, Alabama recommended that Pulaski County make a change to its name to honor General Ulysses S Grant because he had played an important role in county development during his time as governor of Arkansas. The suggestion gained approval from county officials and on November 10, 1907, the new name became effective when Pulaski County received its charter from Arkansas General Assembly #27 which amended Act No 20 of 1906 charters all counties within Pulaski County except those abolished by state law with exceptions being Benton AR (#3), Camden AR (#1), Carroll AR (#2), Fayette AR (#5), Harvey AR (#6) and Jefferson Davis MO#1 which were created on October 9th 1906 pursuant to #27-A act of 1904 reorganized laws contained herein also included but not limited thereto: Arkansas Consolidated Statutes 1905 §§ 43-15 et seq., 45-3 et seq., §§ 431 et seq., 436 et seq., 438 §§ 611 et seq.; all now classified under title 23 (Government Organization etc.) In 1912/13 when voters approved a bond issue for extension of water services into unincorporated areas around the community they also authorized erection of goal posts along Main Street between First Avenue eastward and Third Street westward measuring thirty feet high by seventy feet wide at right angles to each other; these goalsposts remain today as part of downtown streetscape Angell Road & Main Sts
