Blytheville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George McDowell in 1881 when he and his family moved from nearby Jonesboro. The name comes from Blythe River which runs through the town. A post office called Blytheville was established in 1885, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Blytheville grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location as a crossroads between two coal fields and its position on theArkansas Western Railroad. The population reached 10,000 by 1900, but declined during World War I because of military service and crop failures. However, growth recommenced following World War II as a result of new industry and expansion into other towns within Pulaski County. By 2000, Blytheville had reached its present size with over 4,000 residents. During much of its history, Blytheville has been characterized as an agricultural center consisting primarily of cotton farming and cattle ranching operations along with some light manufacturing; however, recent advances have led to dramatic increases in both factory employment and local retail sales throughout the downtown area (including several high-end stores). In addition to being an important commercial hub for the surrounding counties, Blytheville also enjoys warm weather year-round thanks to ample rainfall that drains off into Lake Conway (a reservoir formed by filling up lower parts of Snake Creek) which provides irrigation for many acres of farmland within walking distance of downtown. The current incarnation of Blytheville began to take shape during the late 1960s when developers purchased large tracts of rural real estate within commuting distance from downtown; this process culminated with the opening of several major retailers – including Sears – along one stretch of Main Street near Interstate 40 in 1976ka bringing about substantial redevelopment that continues today under the auspices of Mayor Roy Halladay Jr.. Today's streetscape includes numerous small businesses clustered around three central shopping areas: Diner Row (around Old Main Street), Shopping Center Row (around First Avenue), and New Town Square (just north side Peyton Boulevard).
Blytheville was founded in 1871 by J.P. Morgan, who named it after his daughter Bessie. The town rapidly grew and became an important center for the cotton industry, reaching a population of over 100,000 by 1907. It would go on to become one of the most prosperous small towns in Arkansas, with a thriving economy and manyrasty residents.
