Blytheville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,884 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Blytheville is home to the Arkansas Infantry National Guard's 209th Field Artillery Brigade and its Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) are located in downtown Blytheville. Blytheville experiences intense (month-to-month) daily temperature variation due its location within an urban area with very close proximity to major metropolitan areas like Memphis and Dallas/Fort Worth Airport - both located nearby on I-20 - combined with strong annual "continental" southwest winds that can gust up to 50 mph (80 km/h). The town was named for the bryony tree in nearby Mount Carmel which grew abundantly in the area during the early 1800s. The first post office in the town was established on November 1, 1871. By 1876, Blytheville had a population of sixty-six people and grew quickly as men and women made their way to the new land that had been opened up by the railroad. On July 4, 1907, Blytheville became one of three cities in Bird County when it seceded from Pulaski County. In 1978, Blytheville was designated a state park and is still home to many recreational activities including fishing and hiking.
