Blytheville is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Blytheville was founded on July 3, 1881 by citizens of Springfield, Missouri. The original name for the town was "Springfield Township." A post office called Blytheville was established in 1882, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. The first store in Blytheville opened its doors on October 12, 1882. The store became known as the Merchants Store. In 1893, a post office named Blytheville (still in use) was moved from Springfield to what is now downtown Blytheville. That same year saw the construction of the first school building in Blytheville- which served as both primary and secondary schools until 1923 when a new high school built on present day Broadway Street replaced them. In 1907 the community's grocery store burned down and never reopened; however two years later another grocery store opened up and remain open to this day In 1914 an oil well was drilled near by and early settlers tried to take advantage of it but quickly discovered that there were no pipelines or wells then available to bring oil back to town so they had to find other ways to get their money's worth By 1922 more than 100 businesses had been established within walking distance of where today’s main street meets Village Creek Boulevard From 1912 through 1916 three churches were built: First Baptist Church (now Park Avenue Baptist Church), Methodist Episcopal Church (later Evangelical Bible Society), and Second Presbyterian Churches (now Pentecostal/Charismatic). All three churches still exist today with active congregations . On November 15th 1916 a tornado touched down southeast of town just east of Main Street killing one person flattened several buildings including a blacksmith shop; also destroyed many homes east of Third Street along Village Creek Boulevard Some time after this event some people started calling downtown “Tornado Alley” because all these destruction occurred close by where tornadoes often touch down

It is the county seat of Pulaski County and the most populous city in Pulaski County. Blytheville is named after Mrs. Anna Blythe, who donated land to the town in 1881. The first people to live in what is now Blytheville were Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived during the American Civil War era. They built a log cabin on top of an Indian mound that is still standing today. The original inhabitants of this area were hunter-gatherers until about 1800 when white men started settling hereabouts with small farms and plantations becoming more common from about 1830 onward. In 1881, Mrs. Anna Blythe donated land to the town for its development as a new center for retail trade and farming purposes by her husband David Ainsley Blythe (1828-1920). The first store opened in Blytheville on July 1, 1881 by Jno Hargrave (1854-1934). At that time there were only a few houses and no public buildings other than schoolhouses and a courthouse which served as court house/judicial district office until 1902 when it was replaced by the current structure which stands today In 1886 local citizens organized their own fire department which became operational on September 24th of that year On November 5th of that year Elisha Pritchard (1850-1925) erected the first three blocks of tall white limestone buildings currently known as "The Plaza" located at 501 N Main Street The first post office was established at Blytheville on December 17th of that year On January 11th 1907 C F White (1868-1945) erected his garage across from Herrin's grocery store located at 501 S Main Street . That same year Willis Latham opened his general store across from Herrin's grocery store . On February 4th 1907 Wm T Hill (baptized William Thornton Hill 1865 - 1941) erected his block building south of Stateline Road between Market street and Second avenue . In 1915 G W Goodrich started selling ice cream from his home at 502 N Main Street Mrs Geo M Holloway set up her beauty parlor next door to Herrin's grocery store starting in 1916 also but later closed down due to lack of customers
Blytheville was founded on November 15, 1879 by James M. Blythe and his wife, Fannie. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and oil. In 1907, Blytheville became the first city in Arkansas to be incorporated as a municipal corporation. By 1920, Blytheville had a population of over 100,000 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the years following World War II and experienced an economic boom in the early 1960s. However, by the late 1960s and through the 1970s, Blytheville's economy began to decline as a result of changes in local demographics and technology. In 1978, Blytheville merged with neighboring towns of Pine Bluff and Springdale; these mergers caused the loss of over half of Blytheville's workforce and limited growth until after 2000 when new investments led to renewed economic development in the city.
