Blytheville is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It was established in 1881 and named for Blythweaver, who until recently lived in the town. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Blytheville was John Fenton, who arrived in 1881. He and his family were the first to live on what is now Main Street. A post office was established at Blytheville in 1882, and it remained active until 1907. The first store opened in 1883 by J.W. Goode and his brother-in-law Wm Sargent. In 1886, local cattle ranchers James Hartsfield and Sam Hill started operating a blacksmith shop across from the courthouse on Third Street; this became known as the Hartsfield Shop (now part of Walmart). In 1902, local landowner Julius Cramer donated 4 acres (1 km²) of land east of Main Street to create what is now Park Avenue; this area would become known as "Cramer's Ridge". After years of effort by civic leaders, a school district was organized within Pulaski County in 1903; Blytheville School District #2 was formed that year. The city of Blytheville began to develop rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location as an oil refinery and military base nearby; annexed by Pulaski County on December 12, 1942 following the war's end, it became a municipally owned Enterprise Zone suburb with its own government buildings and schools. The city continued to grow throughout the postwar period as various businesses relocated here from other parts of Arkansas or Illinois; today much of downtown still preserves many wartime features including high-rise housing developments built after 1945 along with several historical buildings dating back to before WWII such as City Hall which still stands today beside Highway 9A (now I-40). On July 10, 1951 tornado touched down just south of town near US 71 & Highway 9A – making it one of only two tornadoes that struck Arkansas during that month – damaging or destroying over 100 homes along Main Street between US 71 & Park Avenue while causing widespread loss throughout the downtown areas around Interstate 40 & Highway 9A (now I-40). That same day also saw the opening ceremonies for both Pulaski County Courthouse Annex #1 - completed six months earlier - and new Pulaski County Jail annexes adjacent to I-40/9A / main business districts respectively; these had been planned well ahead but were not actually necessary due to increased prison capacity resulting from Alabama's efforts during WWII agricultural production quotas Jacob Wetterling murders
Blytheville grew up on a small farmstead in the early 1800s. By the mid-19th century, Blytheville had become an important manufacturing center in Arkansas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Blytheville was one of the several towns in western Arkansas that sided with Confederate forces. The town was destroyed by Union troops in 1865.
