The name "Blytheville" means "Beautiful Heaven." The first settlement in what is now Blytheville was made by James Fenton and his family on May 12, 1822. At that time the area consisted of only a few scattered farms and huts. A post office was established in 1824, and named for Blythecourt Manor which sat atop a hill in the community. In 1830 an act was passed by the Arkansas General Assembly to incorporate as a town; Blytheville became a part of the state on July 1, 1830. In 1838 Daniel Boone crossed over from Tennessee into Arkansas and took possession of land east of present-day Pulaski County line. He named his new tract West Point because it lay at an elevation above Jacksonville Creek where he had encampment for his troops during their attempt to drive out Canadian Indians in that year's Battle of Coweta Creek (now known as Hartsfield-Jackson Airport). Boone's outpost served as one point along this creek route until around 1850 when navigation improved sufficiently for wagon travel on the river between eastern Kentucky and western Tennessee across Kentucky Lake – what is now called Roanoke Rapids National Park – making transportation more feasible than prior methods such as boat or rafting A post office operated at West Point from 1840 until it closed in 1865 due to lack of mail traffic In 1866 Pemiscot Coalfields Railroad reached Blytheville from Memphis via Benton Harbor The railroad arrival led to increased business for local merchants who soon began marketing goods both within town limits and beyond By 1870 there were two schools: one elementary Yesterdays School opened February 6th 1870 under direction of Mrs Salmon Pritchard with 15 pupils; Mrs Jno Cook Academy opened September 5th 1870 with 25 pupils; Miss Harriot Ewing Head Normal School October 8th 1870 with 30 pupils grades 3-8 . . . additional rooms were added including 2 basement stories August 10th 1880 allocated to First Congregational Church after being vacated by Masonic Temple which burned down December 25th 1799 following its unsuccessful attempt to purchase land adjoining First Congregational Church lot number 7 thenceforth used as Methodist Episcopal Church proper until 1922 when it reverted back to First Congregational Church ownership vacated by Masons Temple & then sold parcel #7 back to Pemiscot Coal Company Apr 27 1902 also becoming Methodist EpiscopalChurch again Oct 24 1922 thanksgiving service attended by Mr Jno Cook PresidentArkansas State Legislature Dec 3 1902 cleared title deeds thru Marshall Copley home & donation money received Apr 16 1907 having been vacant since Feb 1897 When Methodists Reverted Back To First Congregational Church Ownership After getting Land From Pemiscot Coal Company Their Name Became Ark Protestant EpiscopalChurches Again On Nov 5 1923 w/ Janus Cooke As President Of The Board Thanksgiving service attended By Governor John Beasley Also Present Rev Dr Wm Copley Pastor
