It is the county seat of Pulaski County and part of the Little Rock-Fayetteville metropolitan area. Blytheville was founded in 1872 by John Waddell and named for its founders, Bishop A. H. Blyth and Mrs. Blyth. The first post office in town was established on December 12, 1872. The first store in town was built by J.Waddell and Bros., which operated from a building that still stands on Main Street between what are now First Avenue South and Second Avenue South today. In 1875, citizens of nearby Springdale organized their own government under the name Pulaski County Court House Annex Committee with a meeting held at the courthouse on January 7th to lay out future boundaries for Pulaski County without interference from Blytheville merchants or citizens whose interests were not affected by these boundary changes.[1] On February 21st 1865 local physician Drury endowed an Academy of Medicine & Surgery at what is now EasternArkansas Medical College/Bryant University Hospital located just east of downtown Blytheville

The first settlers in what is now Blytheville were two brothers, John and James Clardy. They came from Lancashire, England in 1839 and founded a small log cabin on an east-west road that later became Wilson Boulevard. In 1841 they bought 2 miles (3 km) of land from Captain John Gist for $10 per acre ($140 per km²). This site became known as Clardy's Landing because it was here that they landing their first boatload of passengers to venture into Arkansas Territory for what would become Blytheville. In 1845 a post office was established at Blytheville with J.M.Clardy as the first postmaster. By 1850, there were 9 stores and 30 homes in town; however, by 1870 only 5 stores remained and only one home had been built since 1840. The Panic of 1873 destroyed most businesses in town including those run by Clardy family members who lost everything they owned during that time period including their land purchase The last store closed its doors on November 14th 1870 when fire ravaged the building which had been abandoned for years before becoming a ruinous pile of timbers soon after . A new store opened on October 4th 1875 called "The Post" after President Ulysses S Grant's visit to Blytheville just weeks earlier during his term as president of the United States . After several failed attempts to reestablish a post office at Blytheville through local election results due to lack of interest or infrastructure availability, it reopened under special Act No 801 on January 3rd 1880 with Wm H Vail as Postmaster General . On November 15th 1880 Union Pacific Railroad moved its track north from Decatur Junction leading directly to this location making Blytheville an incorporated community with its own government . This township has grown continuously ever since then with over 60 businesses currently located within its borders- many more than existed when it became an incorporated community back in 1880! Today much evidence remains visible surrounding both old homes which remain standing today (many dating back to before incorporation) along Wilson Boulevard as well as newer residences situated throughout downtown surrounded by businesses including banks/commerce/restaurants etc... all testifying to how quickly and dynamically this small rural community has changed over time!
