Blytheville, Arkansas was founded in 1871 by Byron Blythe and his wife Anna. The town accepted its name from the babbling brook that flows through it. At first, the town consisted of a few log cabin homes and a small grain store. However, over time, Blytheville grew into a thriving community with a population of over 500 people in 1915. In 1936, the population had increased to 1,500 and by 1941 it had reached 2,000. The post-World War II boom period was brief however as the oil embargo caused a significant decline in business throughout the early 1990s. By 2000, however, Blytheville's economy had bounced back and 4 new businesses had opened up in that year alone. Today, Blytheville is one of the most vibrant communities in Northwest Arkansas with an active nightlife scene and rich history.
Blytheville was first settled in 1824 by James and Nancy Blythe. The town was named for Bishop John H. Blythe, a Methodist Episcopal priest who served in the Arkansas Territory. In 1827, the town became a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. By 1830, Blytheville had a population of about 200 people. In 1832, the town began to grow rapidly because of its location at the junction of two railroad lines. In 1835, Mayor Isaac Crouch dedicated a new school building and land for public use in Blytheville. A year later, an old cotton gin was replaced by a new cotton gin and engine house in Blytheville. The town also built a courthouse and jail. The towns growth slowed during the 1840s because of lack of available land and money to build roads and infrastructure. However, after statehood in 1861, more money became available to help develop the area around Blytheville. In 1865, Mayor Jeptha Latham dedicated an agricultural farm north of town to provide food for local farmers while also expanding trade within the community by erecting stores and businesses near Highway 20 (now US-70). In 1870-71, when one million acres were parceled out as public lands across Arkansas as part of Reconstruction efforts following America's Civil War, much of this newly acquired acreage was added to what is now known as Arkadelphia County including parts of present day Blytheville. After briefly experiencing heavy industry during World War II (a time when Little Rock significantly improved its infrastructure), today’s economy largely consists of agriculture which is supported by nearby manufacturing companies such as White & Sons Mfg., Inc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Turner Manufacturing Co., Hawkins Construction Company et al..
