Blytheville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 11,731 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The community was named for Blythe Varick, widow of Major General John A. Varick and mother of Rear Admiral Samuel Folsom Varick. The first permanent settler in what is now Blytheville was James Cockerill in 1837. He built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the river in what is today known as south side streets 5th and 6th Streets. At that time there were no roads or railroads through this area so travel by boat or wagon was necessary to get around. A post office called "Cockerill's Bluff" was established in 1838, but it did not remain open very long due to Indians attacking and robbing settlers near by every other year until it finally closed its doors in 1848 after being terrorized by them for several years. In 1849 Stephen Jukes settled here and started an agricultural operation which he continued until his death in 1902; he had also been a landowner here since before that time. His son-in-law Wm Henson became head man of the town when Wm Henson married James Cockerill's daughter Anna Maria Cockerill (1838-1920). In 1861 Confederate soldier Amos Green moved from Quitman to near present day Blytheville with his family and began trading goods with Indian traders living along the Arkansas River east of Fort Smith; he named his new settlement "Greeneville". After Union soldiers destroyed all but one house on Greeneville Creek during their 1862 counteroffensive against Confederate forces defending Johnson City, most citizens relocated to nearby Pulaski County where they formed a new town called "Blytheville" on May 10, 1862 under license from Governor Orrick Hatch based on recommendations from military officers stationed there including Colonel Elijah Whitehurst who noted that: “This point will be our destined terminus if war continues” A post office called "Blytheville" was established at this location on October 2, 1862; it remained open until 1865 because General Nathan Bedford Forrest refused mail delivery to Pulaski residents living west of windows because he believed they were sympathizers with the Confederacy On January 1st 1870 Hiram Swayne arrived at Blytheville from Illinois looking for work and found a job opening as shop keeper with The Arkansas Coal Company which had just opened up in downtown Little Rock The first school building located within present day BlyTHEVILLE was built about 1900 by Mrs Tabbitt who raised money for its construction from her profits from selling eggs she produced at her farmstead across Seventh Street from First Baptist Church (now Second Baptist Church) . That same year Mrs Tabbitt donated two acres of land northwest of her property which housed both schools – one attended by boys while the other girls attended school together – until 1912 when both schools were forced out due to lack of space . In 1916 Dr Mabel Byrd bought Mrs Tabbitt's property adjacent to hers across Seventh Street and turned it into what is today known as Southside High School . Also located on that parcel were Dr Mabel Byrd's medical clinic (later renamed Mayo Clinic), various retail stores (including Piggies grocery store), Post Office Annex #2 (now home to Arkadelphia Newspapers) , civic center and parkland . On July 1st 1918 Southside High School moved onto its current site east of 7th Street between Ihle & Stephens Streets following tornado damage caused by Hurricane Ernesto It should be noted that although some buildings date back over 100 years Parkland Cemetery has been constructed since 1924 commemorating those killed or buried there during that time period
